How to become Responsible and Good Parents?

 Warmth Dimension of Parenting:

In this article, you will learn about Parenting and Parental Affection.

Positive Parenting:

  • Positive Parenting is the continual relationship of parents and a child or children that includes caring, teaching, leading, communicating, and providing for the needs of a child consistently and unconditionally.
  • It provides recognition and guidance which involves setting boundaries to enable the full development of the child.

Warmth Dimension of Parental Acceptance:

  • Warmth Dimension has to do with the quality of the affectional bond between parents and their children, and with the physical, verbal, and symbolic behaviors parents use to express these feelings.
  • Expression of Parental Warmth also depends upon cultures.
  • Parents everywhere may express acceptance and rejection the way they do it is highly variable and saturated with their culture.
  • For example, parents anywhere might praise or compliment their children, but the way in which they do it in one sociocultural setting might have no meaning (or might have a totally different meaning) in a second setting.

Physical Warmth:

  • Physical Warmth refers to parental affection that can be shown physically by hugging, kissing, caring, and comforting.
  • Studies showed that skin-to-skin contact lets children know that they’re safe and protected, building trust between child and parent.
  • Through physical contact strong attachments can be created, thus providing a stable foundation for future relationships (Tiffany, 2011).
  • Oxytocin, known as the “bonding” hormone, is released during times of close physical contact such as breastfeeding.
  • Parent-child interactions may help foster the neurodevelopment of brain regions producing oxytocin, thus enhancing children’s future socio-emotional development (Gardner, 2010).

Verbal Warmth:

  • Parents give affection verbally by praising, complimenting, and saying nice things to or about the child.
  • It may be symbolically in some other way, as with the use of culturally specific gestures. These and many other caring, nurturing, supportive, and loving behaviors help define the behavioral expressions of parental acceptance.
  • Studies show that children who experience daily verbal affection from their parents have greater confidence levels and perform better in and out of the classroom.
  • Parents who communicate well and show affection have a direct correlation with how well children successfully relate and empathize with others (Ricardo, 2016).
